Inside Deep Throat
I hadn't seen the film Deep Throat but after watching the
documentary Inside Deep Throat I was inspired to do so. I
wanted to see what was so special about the film and
understand what was all the hype about a low-budget porn
film made during the 1970s.
The documentary, Inside Deep Throat examines the
goings-ons behind the original film Deep Throat from its
inception to the end result and subsequent propaganda
that began as a result of the film.
What started as an experiment for director and former hair
stylist Gerard Damiano became a porn phenomenal that
inspired Americans at that time to challenge what was
perceived as right and what was considered obscene when
it came to sexual values.
Gerard Damino was a hair-stylist in Queens, New York who
spent his time doing women's hair and as a result spent a
lot of time listening to women complain about their
frustrations when it came to sex with their boyfriends or
husbands. Damino, who was also a swinger himself
decided to set his sights on getting into the adult film
industry based on his realized belief that sex was about
freedom of choice. Subsequently, he and three other
partners came together to create a film on a budget of only
$25,000.
Initially, the film was going to be called, The Doctor Makes A
House Call but after Gerard met Linda Lovelace and saw
her expertise oral sex skills he decided that he would focus
the film entirely on her oral skills - renaming the film to Deep
Throat. Harry Reems who was only a background
production person was thrown into the film as the male lead
as a last minute replacement. Female sexual pleasure and
the comparison of the female mouth as having a clitoris
became a controversial theme which was conceived in the
film
Deep throat was filmed in Florida and then brought back to
New York for post production. No one knew much about who
funded the film but it was later found out that it was funded
and controlled by mafia connections. Advertisement for the
film was made initially in local newspapers in New York and
made its debut on Times Square in New York City.
Times Square during the 1970s was a place in the city
where porn and prostitution was well known. Deep Throat
became a porn phenomenal and everyone from Hollywood
celebs to even middle-class mothers lined up to watch the
film. The theater that showed the film averaged about 1700
patrons per day and was open for almost 20 hours a day.
Meanwhile, the climate from the government's prospective
at that time was that porn was obscene. Key officials in the
government lead a moral campaign to shut down the
theater that was showing Deep Throat. (You have to
remember that this happened during a time before
Americans had VCRs or DVDs - so going to the theater was
the only way to see such a movie.).
The movie received rave reviews from non-conservatives.
What made the movie so unique was that it was one of the
first movies of that time to focus on oral sex as a sex act
more so than penis and vagina sex intercourse. The acting
wasn't all the best but rather more exaggerated as it was
oddly humorous in an attempt to be entertaining.
The film was shut down in New York after a year but played
in several theaters throughout the country and remained as
a top selling movie for over three years straight. Despite the
film's success, the government continued its attempts to
prosecute individuals who were directly and indirectly
involved with the movie.
It was a time of discovery and change in the country.
Change in government and change in laws which focused
on this issue but over time, the controversy slowly fizzled.
Mainstream Hollywood took notice of the film's success and
other porn makers began making similar porn chic movies. It
was their hope that maybe because of this movie and other
similiar films that followed porn could become mainstream -
but that never happened. However, what did happen was
that America was changing and sex was one of the things
that was no longer looked upon as obscene.
The movie that cost only $25,000 to make boast well over
$600, 000 in sales, making it one of the most successful
films of its time. The ending story of many of the key players
in the movie including the stars of the film was pretty bleak.
But, you have to watch the movie in its entirety to
understand what happened.
Deep Throat may or may not be the best porn film to be
ever made, but it was made at a time that a change was
needed in the way people viewed sex.
As for the documentary, the cinematography is very good.
The movie appears to be very well researched as it covered
the various aspects of the original Deep Throat movie from
it's inception, production, controversy and the political
climate that followed.
This documentary received a NC-17 movie rating because
of the vast amount of adult content and nudity from clips
shown from the original Deep Throat as well as clips from
other similar movies in context to the documentary.
I would highly recommend this film to anyone who is
interested in learning more about the making of Deep
Throat and why its became such a porn phenomenal.
